I've got a chance to buy 50 squares of 30 asphalt shingle seconds.
What kind of problems can they cause? My understanding of seconds is that they are rejects. What kind of things cause shingles to be rejected?
The shingles are out of package. What kind of things should I look for when inspecting?
dougie, i dont know about shings but ive bought factory seconds on i&w, epdm, & bonding adh. & that was a big mistake on my part. shings are so expensive these days its worth a look. make sure there not all stuck together or cut outs in the wrong place & etc.
I have heard tons of guys complain about Snaggle toothed shingles, and I am sure that those are rejects that made it past Q.C. , or should have been seconds. I have seen these with IKO, Tamko Herritage 30s, and once in a blue moon I discard 1 or 2 of the new Timberline Prestiques, But for the most part I have not seen this for quite a while now...
If the shingles have the tar on the seal strip blotted then they will never seal, and i am sure that their are plenty of other problems that can arise.
Imho, I would not use a lesser quality product, It will only bite you in the butt later, and could also infect a god reputation that you may have now...
As the roofer, i wouldn't even consider using
an inferior product, after all i am the one that has to stand behind the product and if you have problems
with the roof later down the line it's me that your going to come to.
Your most important parts of your house is the
foundation and your roof, as a homeowner why
would you waste money on putting 2nds to save a
few bucks now and then have to turn around in
a few years 1-5 and do it again.
I know not everyone has money laying around
and is probably an issue, but your roof is
the last place you want to skimp on, but
it's usually the first place they do.
So true...yet they'll pay top dollar for a...couch!
what did the folks your buyin em from say was wrong with them?
what makes them seconds?
end of the run color was a little off, some the tar strips weren't placed right and adhesive would have to be added
