Hi Guys hopefully everyone had a great holiday and are looking forward to an excellent new year.
Quick question regarding metal roofing. How loud is a standing seam roof in rain, wind, snow, leaves etc... and if they are loud what can be done to dampen the noise?
We don't do a whole lot of metal roofing, mainly a few here and there in cottage country and we often get asked this question about the roofs. Its mainly from people who want to go from a cedar or asphalt shingle into a metal roof and are concerned.
Most of the roofs we have done they already had a metal roof and dont experience any change.
We usually install a iso board down before we install metal standing seam.
we've done alot of conversions from cedar to metal, no one has complained about them being to noisey..
If the attic is well insulated there shouldn't be a problem. I have a standing seam metal roof on my addition and asphalt shingles(till they wear out)on the main roof. I don't notice any difference between the two areas regarding noise.
We do 90% metal and not one person has complained about the noise however they all ask before we install.
yes they all ask..funny.
It's always the "somebody said" story. Amazing how that's the first response I get when I suggest steel. Ask them if their car is noisy when it rains and if they think it would be quieter with shingles.
Ah yes, the "somebody told me" dilemma. I have the same problem when it comes to spray foam. You would be surprised how many myths there are circulating about foam, and I'm not talking about for roofing.
As for the metal roof, I've always found the sound of rain on a metal roof to be soothing.
the amount of noise depends on how solid your deck is,plywood deck less noise than say straps @ 24" o/c,but all in all not much nosier than shingle.Shakes absorb alot of the sound though
insulation is supposed to be an r-49 value and thats 15 and 3/4 inches that might help out and save you money at the same time
Yea we get asked the same question all the time too.
My latest favorite: We are right now replacing a metal shingles roof in Hartford CT - it is an interlock aluminum roof that is about 8-10 years old. We are replacing it with a steel metal shingles roof- the only difference is essentially the metal. So the customer who lived with this aluminum shingles roof for 8-10 years is asked me if they will hear the rain noise... I asked them if they've heard it for the last 8-10 year...
