I just had my roof done... partially. Father in law is doing it with another family member. I guess the roof has to be inspected before the shingles are put down and it is the 4th of July weekend and the inspector was not able to make it out today so we have to wait till at least monday for the inspection. It was a complete tear off. There is new plywood on it and the felt paper and ice guard is down. Problem is that it is going to rain tonight and im concerned. Can you let me know if it is ok to have the roof exposed like this with a day of rain or is this going to be a problem?

The felt, if it does not leak, due to inexperience from your friendly installers, will wind up getting very buckled and bumpy when the sun dries it out.

If it does, you should strongly consider ripping it off and doing it again, so it lays flat and dry, otherwise those lumps will Telegraph through the newly installed shingles and it will look like someone swept dirt clumps under the carpet and you will regret not doing it Right the first time.

If you have time and you are concerned about leaks, go and buy enough 20' x 30' blue tarps from Menard's or Home Depot or Lowe's and nail them at the perimeter edges to cover the felt.

It's probably too late for you to do that safely now though, so, enjoy staying up all night looking for rain drops coming through your drywall ceiling and walls.

Just be on the look out for water running down into an electrical outlet and shorting the electrical system out or starting a fire.

But, other than that, your probably okay.

Didn't anyone look at the Weather Forecast first?

The good thing if it does leak and damage occurs, is that your home owners insurance might cover some of the damage.

The bad thing is, that if they do have to, they will "Subrogate" the costs of the repairs against the responsible, or, irresponsible parties, sort of like suing them for the reimbursement.

I doubt that anyone considered getting a Rider on an Insurance Policy to cover the unexpected potential damages, did they? Or, did they already have some other company that they do business as, which carries General Liability Insurance?

Good Luck.

Ed

incorrect. The complete opposite is the truth.

The exposed felt wrinkles up over night-- every night-
due to the moisture in the air. You might relate to it as morning due.

The sun drys out my installed felt flat as a board.

And yes, you are correct that you should not shingle over wrinkled felt.
Wait for the sun to dry it out flat or cut the wrinkles out with your knife.

I start the sections that the sun hits first. It will be the flattest.
If the sun cant make it through the trees to flatten out a section, than you slice the felt directly down the center of the wrinkle and thats it.

All that said, Tarping a roof overnight will stop the felt from wrinkling 90% along with giving extra rain protection.
