From what I read here IKO are not very popular and GAF/ELK are, but sometimes the opinions on specific models of things can vary from the overall opinion. Any thoughts on the shingles above? The contractor is recommending the GAF/ELK.
I'm in Vancouver, and it's a complete tearoff with all new deck. We're getting ridge venting and intend to live in this house until they carry us out. Not usre if this all matters, but wanted to be sure you had correct background.

GAF
and I think 40 year shingles are a waste of money. Either get the 30, or the 50. _________________ -Jason

Being in Vancouver your GAF/Elk will be coming out of the Shafter/Fontana plant, and the IKO will come from Sumas. This is noteworthy for two reasons.
1. Most of the people I've seen claiming IKO shingles have problems are from back east. They are not getting their shingles from the Sumas plant which you would be. I have to believe this makes a difference based on the difference of what I see reported on here, and what I have experienced hands on.
2. You will not be able to get a Timberline Prestique 40 shingle with an algae resistant component out of Shafter, or 30 or Lifetime for that matter. At Least here in the Pacific Northwest we cannot. They flat refuse to discuss it.
I would recommend out of the two brands that you mention, go with the IKO Roofshake 40 if it's available with the algae resistant component in Canada(I assume you meant Vancouver, BC) if not then I would recommend you upgrade to the IKO Cambridge LT, which does have the algae resistant copper granule. Vancouver is not too far from Seattle, and we get a lot of black algae here. The algae resistant shingle should reduce your maintenance and keep your new roof looking pretty for a longer period of time. |

Two more things that I think are worth noting:
The other responses here pretty succinctly state "GAF". You will not be getting the GAF Timberline shingle that they may be familiar with, you will be getting the Elk Prestiqe High Definition 40 Shingle. This is a great shingle, I put it on my own house, but it's not GAF in the strictest terms. GAF bought out Elk a couple of years back because (I've been told) of the patented granule distribution/color that Elk had on their product that was basically kicking the other manufacturers asses. It's a very distinctive look that gives the shingle a lot of depth. They also do something interesting with the backsurfacing on the 40 and lifetime versions that make the shingle look thicker. I still think the algae resistant component outweighs the potential aesthetic gain and would go with the IKO product.
You may also get a better wind warranty with the IKO Cambridge LT, (130 mph when it's 6 nailed and you use their starter and ridge). |

IKO Roofer.... You speak alot of sense with the algae resistant talk! New zealand is alot like the north west in that the roofs attract ALOT of algae.
I use PABCO shingles because of the algae resistant warranty, and also because there 30 year shingles have the biggest sealing strip(30 year shingles are 90% of the new zealand market) the area im in has some HUGE winds so i cant go wrong with the pabco.
Case and point.... an ELK shingle was installed just around the corner from my house 3 and half years ago (i now know the owner) and it all ready has a heap of alge staining.. it looks super ugly.
Gaf/elk are not a real bad product, i just get confused as to why so many people swear by it? is it just because ofthe companys share size?
some people wear BEER goggles, and some wear GALF/ELK goggles |

haha downunder.
I tell you I swear by it ONLY because I swore by ELK. I was not a big fan of GAF before they merged but since they did I have had zero call backs because of any problems with the shingle itself. Usually it has always been the install. In 5 years when they have been merged for awhile ask me if I still swear by them. I do not know. _________________ Are you a roofer or a nailer? |
