I do agree that cougar paws can lead to a false sense of security.
But, after wearing them for over 4 years now on all types on roofs in all types of weather that false sense of security is shrinking.

For me, 9/12 is the steepest that I can safely carry a bundle a shingles or anything for that matter.
But I like Agapes answer better. Very Happy

All I know is if I had a piece of foam, I feel like I could probably take a nap in the valley of a 6:12.

Carrying a bundle? Um... well, that's why these days I'm the contractor & not so much the labor end of it.

Everyone has their own personal safety & comfort zone... just remember to especially not exceed it even under a "just this once" circumstance & use common sense.

One of the 1st thing I ever taught myself when I got into this business is something I try to remind myself every day I do this job:

"Let it go."

There's not a single thing that is worth me chasing it off the edge of a roof.

Cougar Paws are great but if they made them more like a sneaker I would even like them better. I wear them on every roof over 7/12 but they are boots and not good for the ankles. I even tried rock climbing shoes with the new miracle stealth rubber and after spending $90.00 they suck. Cougar Paws are made to stand with your feet at a 90 degree angle to your legs but I find if I do that I keep falling off anything over 6/12.

First time on a roof I was scared to walk on a 6 pitch. Now I am comfortable walking on a 9. Anything above, it depends on the height of the building (im more worried about height than pitch). Cougar paws are an expensive waste of a feeling of security.

I wear nike running shoes. They grip like glue.

Yeah, I can think of more than a few things that are more fun than a 6:12 or steeper with 25 year old 3T's & grit that feels like you're walking on ball bearings or you're a drunk old man on skates.

Ya, I recently bid a 42 Sq 8/12 that was built in 1962 with original shingles...They had gutters put up 10 or so years ago and every downspout had at least 3"+ of granules...Needless to say I didn't get the roof as I refused to go up...lol

Also, met an adjuster one time on an 8/12 cedar shake that was at least 50 years old...you could pinch the wood and almost touch your fingertips together...neither of us went up that one..it was like ice!!
