We rarely hit the magical 1sq per hr per man for the entire scope of work, just shingling, yes.

It is usually about 3/4 sq/hr/man.

We do 3 sq. hour on walkable roofs and 2 sq. hour on steep roofs. This is for one man. We have 3 nailers and 1 labor.

Every guy I have ever hired can shingle 2 square an hour.

I just have never seen it happen, yet. lol

It would be nice if they did. If I have four guys on a crew. I should be able to do a 80 square steep in one day, then.
Yeah, I haven't seen them do that yet. Not even once. I think something is wrong with their math. lol lol

I get a kick out of the guys that claim to hand nail 3-4 sq/hour...
I used to be a pretty fast shingler and the most I have ever done by myself is 11 2/3 sq in 2 1/2 hrs for 3-tabs and 23 sq in 6 hrs, all by myself, no help at all.
They were straight and nailed right also...

With Landmarks if you are applying at a rate of 3/sq per hour that is 3.3 shingles per minute or a shingle every 18 seconds.
It can be done, roofers do it all the time and more, but not all day every day...
Especially if they are nailed right and straight.
You have to cut your valleys, walls, and edges also, this counts towards your hourly rate.
You are not really doing 3 sg/hr if you have a helper either.
He is getting paid isn't he?

I used to tote up 3 bundles of thick butt asplalt shinglre and nail them on and get 3 more and still hand nail 20 squares a day. I did this for 15 years then I started toting two bundles, now I just tote one. I average 12+ squares a day on a 8/12+, and a little more on a walk on if it's not too cut up. Two straight sides is hard to come by but I could still hit 20 squares on a walk on.

I like my installers to lay at least two squares an hour but I would rather them do top quality than race through a roof. They are paid hourly if that means anything.

One installer has laid shingles for 35 years, another for 12 years, and another for 9 years. I bet money if they were paid by the square they would fly! I know two roofs that have laid for over 20 years each one is very fast the other is slow but since both are hacks I don't use them.

Back when I was a one man show doing new roofs I figured my average was right at 2 squares an hour which included loading, papering, and clean up. Doing two to three roofs a week solo can get old though.

Not going to go into most squares per day or per hour, that subject has been beat to death.

What I do know is that insurance pays around $300 a square for walkers and $400 for med. steep roofs and up to $500 for steep roofs. That being said I am able to pay top dollar hourly insist on top quality and still make fair money.

What I have noticed though is when I am on the roof shingling the installers lay quicker than when I am either on the ground or away from the site.

My payout is a lot more than what an immigrant crew could do it for. My home owners like my crew though and that means a lot.
